What is a Rego Check?
What is a Rego Check?
A registration check (rego check) refers to a service which can be used to confirm a vehicle’s details as well as its current registration status.
Over 1/3 of future used car buyers are not confident in buying a used car. A car rego check is the first step to peace of mind before deciding to buy, and it can uncover any potential safety risks that the car may have.
How do I run a rego check?
Vehicle registration can be checked using the rego number or the VIN number if the car was made before 1989. More often than not, rego checks can be performed online via the Government body responsibly for road and traffic services in any given State throughout Australia.
Rego check vs Car history check
A rego check is different to a car history check. A car rego check includes fairly basic details such as:
- Registration number
- Registration status
- Registration expiry
- Make, model and body shape
A complete car history check will offer more information, giving you a better overview of the history of any vehicle you are about to drive or purchase second hand. This information includes:
- Registration status, rego number and expiry date
- Model and body shape
- PPSR Certificate
- Whether a car has been stolen or written off
- Finance check – whether a vehicle has any encumbrance owing
- Odometer check
- Vehicle valuation and price comparison (great if you’re looking to buy a second hand vehicle!)
- VIN check
- Full sales history
Why should I check my registration?
Car registration is a necessity for all Australian motor vehicles, and it’s illegal to drive a vehicle on public roads if it’s not currently registered.
Penalties for driving an unregistered vehicle may vary State by State in Australia, but they are often heavy no matter what State you’re in. These can include financial penalties, loss of license and loss of demerit points.
If you are driving an unregistered vehicle, it’s like that it’s not covered by compulsory third party (CTP) insurance. It is the responsibility of the driver to make sure that the car is registered before driving it.
By running a rego check, you also decrease the likelihood of putting yourself, your passengers or the wider population at risk of injury or even death. You’re much more likely to catch a mechanical failure if you know a car’s true history.
